Tablet PCs and UMPCs
Tablet PCs and Ultra-Mobile PCs are the newest generation of mobile computers. Tablet PCs provide all the power of a standard Microsoft Windows-based notebook PC plus additional features that improve mobility including pen-input, light form-factors, and handwriting and speech recognition. UMPCs offer the convenience of a small PC and touch screen. These enhancements increase the number of ways people can use computers for practical and creative work.

Tablet PCs and Ultra-Mobile PCs use Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 or Windows Vista Premium SKU to provide ink and speech features. Software applications listed on TabletPCPost.com highlight these special features. Remember that you can also use standard Windows applications on Tablet PCs and Ultra-Mobile PCs.

Overview

The Windows XP Tablet PC Edition Development Kit facilitates building ink-enabled applications for Tablet PC. The combination of software and hardware in a Tablet PC enables these methods of user interaction and allows for a rich, interactive, and productive computing experience for users.

The Tablet PC platform encompasses Windows XP and its extensions that enable input and output of handwriting and speech data on a Tablet PC as well as interchange of this data with other computers. The Windows XP Tablet PC Edition Software Development Kit (SDK) enables you to build ink-enabled, pen-enabled, and speech-enabled applications and supporting hardware for the Tablet PC.

System Requirements

  • Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Service Pack 2
  • Visual Studio version 6 with Service Pack 5 or Visual Studio .NET (Both may be installed on the same computer.)
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 (recommended)

Consult the SDK documentation for more information on system requirements. Note: You must be running Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 to install the Tablet PC Development Kit on a Tablet PC .

Note: The Tablet PC Development Kit can be installed on certain non-Tablet PC operating systems (listed above). On these platforms your application can collect ink with the InkCollector class and can be tested and debugged. The InkEdit and InkPicture controls can be used to collect ink on these operating systems when the Tablet PC SDK is installed, but are not able to collect ink on non-Tablet PC systems that do not have the Tablet PC SDK installed.

Note: The Tablet PC SDK requires certain files from a later version of the Microsoft Platform Software Development Kit (SDK) than shipped with Visual Studio 6. Please download the latest Platform SDK from MSDN? if you are using Visual Studio 6.

Instructions

  1. After downloading the setup executable or locating it on your MSDN CD, click the Start button, click Run, and then type drive:\path\Setup.exe where drive is the letter of your the drive containing the setup and path is the path to the setup executable. Click OK.
  2. At the welcome screen, click the Next button.

  5. Select complete or custom (default) installation option, and click Next.
  6. Click Install to install the SDK.
  7. Click Finish.

The compiled binary executables for the samples are installed in the \Program Files\Microsoft Tablet PC Platform SDK\Bin folder.

You can view the source code and sample applications using the Samples and Source Code shortcut.
